The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Thessaly, and in particular the Creative Technologies Learning Lab (CTLL), organised an experiential workshop on 16 December 2025 focusing on the design of innovative solutions inspired by nature. The activity was attended by 45 students from the 2nd Model Lyceum of Volos, who visited the Department’s computer laboratory accompanied by their teachers, Ms Giola Dimitrakopoulou and Ms Effi Naomidou.
The students participated in an interactive biomimicry workshop, an emerging methodological approach that draws on natural models, mechanisms and processes to develop sustainable and innovative solutions. Working in teams, they followed all stages of the creative design process, from problem definition and analysis to the study of natural systems, creative imitation, idea synthesis and the evaluation of alternative proposals. The objective of the workshop was to design solutions aimed at improving quality of life in the city of Volos, adopting an approach that works in synergy with nature rather than against it.
During the workshop, students made use of digital learning services and educational resources developed by the University of Thessaly, strengthening the development of practical and applicable green and digital skills, with a particular emphasis on sustainability, creative thinking and collaboration.
The activity was implemented within the framework of the research project LET’s MIMIC, which is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme through the Greek National Agency (IKY). In addition to the University of Thessaly, the project involves educational organisations from Romania, France, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. The scientific coordinators of the project are Ms Charikleia Tsalapata, member of the Special Teaching Staff of the Department, and Emeritus Professor Mr Ilias Houstis.
By opening its laboratories to secondary education students and promoting creativity inspired by nature, the University of Thessaly strengthens the link between education and research and reaffirms its commitment to innovation, sustainability and the empowerment of the next generation of creators.
