Established in February 2024, the monthly series of scientific seminars with distinguished guest speakers from around the world. In our second seminar for the
academic year 2025-2026 we are delighted to host Prof. Alan Verkman.
Wednesday October 8th 2025 at 15:00 Greece time
Targeting epithelial chloride transporters by
small molecules to treat diseases
Alan S. Verkman, M.D., Ph.D

The speaker: Dr. Verkman received his MD and Ph.D. degrees at Harvard
University and has worked in the areas of epithelial physiology and neurobiolo
gy, including small molecule drug development. He is most known for discov
ery of the first small molecule modulators of CFTR, the defective gene in cystic
fibrosis, and for elucidating novel roles of aquaporin water channels. Dr. Verk
man has done groundbreaking work in the field of Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO)
by identifying the binding of NMO-IgG autoantibody to AQP4 water channels
in astrocytes elucidating the pathogenesis of the disease. He has published more
than 700 publications and more than 40 patents, which have been cited more
than 103,000 times, an h-index of 175, and several of his drug candidates are in
clinical trials. Dr. Verkman has received numerous awards, most recently the
2025 Hans H. Ussing award of the American Physiological Society.
