Foreign Language Centre

Welcome to the website of the Foreign Language Centre (FLC) of the University of Thessaly. Here you can find information on the aims, administration and staff of the FLC as well as information on the curriculum and other activities.

The Foreign Language Centre of the University of Thessaly, taking into account that the acquisition and effective use of foreign languages can significantly contribute to the fulfillment of needs on a research, academic, and professional level, mainly aims to reinforce practices in foreign language teaching, addressing the actual needs of students and the academic community as a whole.

More specifically, some of the aims of the Foreign Languages Centre are the following:

1. Foreign language teaching (English, French, German, Italian) for special, academic, and business purposes to undergraduate students in departments of the University of Thessaly.
2. Foreign language teaching for general purposes (beyond the basics taught in departments of the University of Thessaly) and promotion of multilingualism and multiculturalism, in order to achieve the connection of the local and academic community with "citizens of the world".
3. Teaching the Greek language to foreign students, who are completing part of their studies at the University of Thessaly through an Erasmus or other educational programs.
4. Conducting research programs and organizing conferences, seminars, symposiums and lectures.
5. Signing bilateral-interuniversity agreements with equivalent research centers for foreign languages abroad, aiming at staff mobility for training and/ or teaching.
6. Collaborating with social and scientific institutions, on a national or international level

ADMINISTRATION

The Foreign Language Centre was founded in 2017 (FEK 101/24-1-2017) as an evolution, upgrade and expansion of the activities of the then operating "Foreign Languages Office". It is an academic unit serving under the supervision of the Vice Rector, who is responsible for all academic matters, and it is managed by a 5-member Administrative Board consisting of three resident Professors or Associate Professors and two members of the Special Teaching Staff appointed by the Senate, following the Rector's recommendation.

The Chair and Deputy Chair of the Board are appointed by the Professors-members of the Board. An equal number of substitute members of the Administrative Board are appointed with the same procedure. The Administrative Board is appointed for a two year term (FEK B' 101/24-1-2017).

The Foreign Language Centre operates according to its Internal Regulation which is approved by the Senate and is part of the Internal Regulation of the University of Thessaly.
