The Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design (FWSD) is a new innovative School for the Greek academic status quo, established in 2019 as part of the University of Thessaly and in line to the Law 4589/2019.
Its students attend an innovative studies’ program, 5 years in duration that, after its completion, leads to the granting of an integrated master in the field of Forester, Wood Scientist and Products’ Designer. The specific program provides an integrated knowledge from the sustainable management of natural environment, till the utilization of its main products, emphasizing to wood products and their uses, but also to the design of products. This exact gradual of knowledge provided, we believe that constitutes a fundamental competitive advantage in a labor market which demands graduates with a plenary academic profile, acquisition of valuable skills and integrated way of thinking.
The Department provides 2 specializations of studies (Management of Natural Environment and Wood Sciences & Products Design) from the 7th semester and onwards. The Bachelor Program provides to the students of the FWSD besides the mandatory courses and a great variety of optional courses which aim to the provision of advanced knowledge in specialized fields of natural environment, wood utilization, furniture and other objects design based on wood as a material, of business management and organization, economics and the import of contemporary technology in organizations and businesses, which are subject of immediate implementation in the market. Furthermore, the Department provides and Post Graduate Programs (Maters and Ph.D.’s).
The FWSD Department has contemporary infrastructures and building facilities (3 halls, 20 classrooms and laboratories, 45 offices) of over 4.000 m2 located in an area of more than 10.000 m2. The laboratory and research equipment is exemplary, securing the plenary state of the art knowledge transfer in the scientific fields of the Department’s expertise. Furthermore, the students are trained through internships in the private and public sectors.
The Professors of the Department have a high-level research and academic profile, with significant publications in scientific journals and conferences along with the coordination and participation in numerous national and international competitive research programs.
The Department is located at Karditsa city, a town in the center of Greece and very close to major Greek cities, such as Larisa (50 minutes), Thessaloniki (2,5 hours) and Athens (3,5) hours. The city of Karditsa constitutes a significant academic center of Greece’s higher education, holding an extended academic campus inside the city, of 5 University Departments and four (4) studies programs. The student’s population is a major part of the city life (more than 2.000 active students). Because of the long-lasting tradition for student’s hospitality, the city has developed infrastructures that are quite friendly to student’s life, such as an extended cycling network for bicycles.
