May 20 has been established as World Bee Day by the UN, aiming to raise public awareness about the need to strengthen protection measures for this vital insect, essential to the continuity of life on our planet. To a very large extent, food production for humans and animals, global biodiversity, and the preservation of the natural environment depend on the pollination abilities of bees. It is no exaggeration to say that our life on Earth significantly depends on the survival and well-being of both bee colonies and the beekeepers who care for them.
In the wake of the loss of thousands of bee colonies during the natural disasters caused by storm Daniel in 2023, the British broadcaster BBC produced a short documentary highlighting the efforts of a professional beekeeper and postgraduate student at the Department of Animal Science of the University of Thessaly, as he strives to rebuild his hives after the catastrophe. Supporting his efforts was the Laboratory of Applied Beekeeping of the University and the company APIVITA SA, as part of the filming took place at the Laboratory’s apiary, located at the Gaiopolis campus of the University.
