The Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology (DΒΒ) of the University of Thessaly welcomed the first undergraduate students in 2000 and has marked a path dedicated to education and research ever since. Twenty-five years later, the department, now located in Biopolis in the city of Larisa, has state-of-the art teaching and lab spaces and offers a certified undergraduate course and six certified postgraduate (MSc) courses. So far, more than 2000 people have graduated, including 100 with the highest academic qualification (PhD).
The Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology is a vivid scientific community with national and international recognition. It is the coordinator of the National Research Infrastructure of Synthetic Biology, OMIC-Engine, supporting the undergraduate team, iGEM Thessaly, which has been participating in the iGEM competition and each year has excelled by bringing home golden medals and awards.
To celebrate 25 productive years in academia, the Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology invites everybody (graduates, scientists, students, academics, teachers, artists, local government officials and people from society at large) to participate in a series of actions and events.a series of actions and events.

The Department of Biochemistry & Biotechnology organizes the Graduate Week on 2-6 June 2025 and invites all its graduates to a long reunion event with many happenings!
