Department of Physical Education and Sport Science

The Department of Physical Education and Sport Science was founded in 1993 and the first students were admitted during the Academic year 1994-1995; DPESS now is part of the School Physical Education, Sport Science and Dietetics. 

The Department strives for a continuous quality improvement of its teaching and research output. The Department is being acknowledged as one of the best Greek institutions engaged in exercise and quality of life by awarding excellence through its bachelor, its graduate, and its innovative research and social activities.

The vision of the Department is "To transform the lives of those who engage us through knowledge, education, research and innovation and to be nationally and internationally recognized as the Greek agent for excellence in exercise science, sport, health and quality of life. Our goals include a further increase of links with society outside academia and attracting people with outstanding talent from all walks of life."

Its mission and objectives are: a) to cultivate and promote Physical Education and Sport Science through theoretical and applied teaching and research,  b) to provide graduates with all the knowledge and skills necessary for their scientific and career development, c) To contribute to the advancement of Greek Sports and to promote the ideals of sportsmanship, ethical behavior and fair play, d) To promote public awareness of the importance of exercise as a main contributor to the improvement of health and quality of life.

The Department organizes several master degree programs: “European Master in Sport and Exercise Psychology” (in collaboration with the University of Leipzig, Germany), “Exercise and Health”, “Exercise, Ergo-spirometry and Rehabilitation” and “Military Fitness and Wellbeing”.
