About the Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO)
The Yale University Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1965 by a group of students who believed that a major orchestral ensemble could thrive within the university.
Dedicated to promoting young talent and presenting works by lesser-known composers alongside performances of well-established Western repertoire, the orchestra attracted students eager to perform orchestral music at a conservatory level.
Over its 50+ years, the orchestra has performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls in the USA—from Carnegie Hall in New York to Benaroya Hall in Seattle—and has toured twelve countries. It has premiered over 50 works by contemporary composers, including Leonard Bernstein, Benjamin Britten, and Caroline Shaw.
YSO alumni have pursued careers in major orchestras worldwide, such as:
- New York Philharmonic
- Israel Philharmonic
- Boston Symphony Orchestra
- Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
- Berlin Philharmonic
YSO’s conductor, William Boughton, is now in his seventh and final season with the orchestra.
WILLIAM BOUGHTON
William Boughton comes from a family of musicians: his grandfather, Rutland Boughton, was a composer, his father was a professional violinist, and his mother was a singer.
After studying cello at the New England Conservatory, Guildhall School of Music, and the Prague Academy, he performed professionally with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Orchestra, and London Sinfonietta.
His experience in orchestras led him to pursue conducting passionately. He studied under George Hurst and Sir Colin Davis. In 1980, he founded the English String Orchestra (ESO), recording primarily English music to international acclaim with Nimbus Records. Several of ESO’s recordings reached the top 10 on the Billboard classical charts.
In July 2007, Boughton became the 10th Music Director of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO). Under his leadership, NHSO won two ASCAP awards for innovative programming. His recordings of William Walton’s works (Walton Project) were critically acclaimed, with Gramophone magazine recommending them for "Record of the Year" (2010).
Boughton became the Music Director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra in 2018, and this marks his final season with the orchestra.
