Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Thessaly was founded according to the article 22 of the 4589/2019 Law and is based in Lamia, while the first students were admitted in the academic year 2019-2020.
The objectives of the Department are:
• the training of undergraduate students that will enable them to understand the fundamental concepts of Mathematics and the cultivation of mathematical thinking and allow them to manage issues that require qualitative and quantitative understanding,
• the provision of high-level mathematical knowledge to students, that corresponds to the classical and modern areas of mathematical science evolution,
• graduates’ effective training which will enable them to meet the needs of education, economy and research.
The Curriculum of the Department offers basic courses, which cover a wide range of mathematical science knowledge, as well as specialized elective courses from the scientific areas of Theoretical Mathematics, Computational and Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Probability and Operations Research, and Didactics.
The Department of Mathematics offers opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral research while its institutionalized Mathematical Sciences Research Laboratory (MSRL) elaborates interdisciplinary research and provides support in the scientific areas it specializes in.
Graduates of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Thessaly, as well as of other Mathematics Departments, who plan to engage in Secondary Education, are given the opportunity to be certified for their Pedagogical and Teaching competence, if they successfully attend a number of basic courses and didactics modules, as described in the Curriculum, as well a Practice in Teaching Mathematical Modules.
Meanwhile, the successful completion of a particular number of compulsory and elective courses provides graduates of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Thessaly with certified digital skills competency and particularly, in operating computers and using IT tools and software packages.
Finally, throughout the course of studies, the students of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Thessaly are offered the opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills abroad through the Erasmus + program study visits to other Institutions.
