Important Distinction of the Civil Engineering Department: Financing Research through the European Programme ΙNTERREG V-A "GREECE - BULGARIA 2014-2020"

The Civil Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly announces its participation as a partner / beneficiary in the project "Water resources efficiency and conservative use in water supply systems - WATER RESCUE" (Funding: Cooperation Programme INTERREG VA "GREECE - BULGARIA 2014-2020", 2nd Call for Proposals). Coordinator of the proposal was Associate Professor V. Kanakoudis.
Specifically, 210 proposals were submitted by the two countries (Greece and Bulgaria) participating in the Cooperation Program, of which 49 were approved (23% success rate) and the WATER RESCUE proposal received the highest score.
The research project’s aim is the sustainable management of cross-border water resources and the achievement of conservative water use through the improvement of water quality throughout the whole water supply cycle, the increase of water efficiency and the reduction of the vulnerability of water resources to climate change. For the realization of the project, the University of Thessaly collaborates with the following organizations from the two countries involved: 1) Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Komotini, Greece (Lead Partner), 2) Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Thermi, Greece, 3) Municipality of Kardzhali, Bulgaria, 4) Municipality of Gotse Delchev, Bulgaria, 5) Municipal Water Supply and Sewerage Company of Thermaikos, Greece.
The coordination of the research project by the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Thessaly will contribute to linking academic research with the needs of the market in order to create mechanisms for detecting potential entrepreneurship and research excellence, especially in the field of drinking water management.
