The Pedion Areos Complex, located where Athinon and Sekeri streets intersect, houses the Departments of the School of Engineering. The Complex includes the buildings of the former water pump manufacturing Paparrigas factory, which were restored, and the new building of the Department of Planning and Regional Development. More specifically:
The Fytoko building, located at the Municipality of Nea Ionia, on Fytokou street, is the renovated building of the Matsangos tobacco factory warehouse. The building was specially adapted to meet the needs of the two Departments of the School of Agricultural Sciences. It comprises lecture halls, three auditoriums, the School and the Departments Secretariats, the Postgraduate Studies Programmes, as well as laboratories and offices of the academic staff members. A structure was built on the same site to serve as an energy centre, a prefabricated structure and greenhouse facilities were put up for the Laboratory of Entomology and Agricultural Zoology and another building was constructed in which the laboratories are housed. The Deligeorgis building, at the intersection of Glavani and Alexandras streets in the city centre, houses the Department of Computer and Communications Engineering, as well as laboratories and offices of the academic staff of the Departments of Primary and Pre-School Education. The Departments of the School of Humanities also use lecture halls and auditoriums in a building at 9, Gamveta street. The former French Institute at the intersection of G. Kartali and Rozou streets, houses the Department of Economics, while the Department Secretariat and the offices of its academic staff are located in a building at 43,Korai street. The University Student Hall of Residence and the Student Restaurant are at the intersection of 2 Noemvriou and Vernardaki streets. The University of Thessaly Library is on the block bordered by Dimitriados, Ermou and Skopelou streets. The neoclassical building formerly housing the Bank of Athens was used for this purpose. The building had suffered serious damage after the 1953 earthquakes. It was restored and additional sections were added in the same style and aesthetics of the initial building. The Library has the capacity for 100.000 volumes. The Technical Infrastructure Directorate is found in the three-storey neoclassical building, the former Kavouras building, located where Oikonomaki and Gamveta streets intersect. The old Matsangos tobacco factory, under restoration, is located where Ermou, Pavlou Mela and Alexandras streets meet in the centre of Volos. The three-storey neoclassical mansion belonging to the Tsikriki family, under restoration, is at the intersection of Iasonos and Gamveta streets. The Kitsos Makris Folk Art Centre is located at the house of folk art historian Kitsos Makris in Volos. After his death, and according to his wish, his family donated the house and all his collections of books, transparencies and photographs to the Library of the University of Thessaly which administers it, in order to operate a research centre and a Folk Art Museum. St Nicolas Monastery in Paou, about 43 km in the southeast of the city of Volos and about 4 km away from the biggest village of the area, Argalasti, was established in the beginning of the 18th century. Nearly forgotten by time, the monastery is now a conference centre where cultural events are held on behalf of the University of Thessaly. The 11-hectare Farm of the University of Thessaly lies in the Velestino area and is used by the students of the School of Agricultural Sciences for research and practical training purposes. The farm has greenhouses, laboratories, a storage station and agricultural machinery repair workshop, student and teacher hostels, a restaurant, a lecture room, storage facilities and the director’s residence on its premises. The same lot of land at Velestino also has greenhouses where organic crops are cultivated by the School of Agricultural Sciences.
A meteorological station is set up at the village of Milies in Mount Pilion.
University premises in Larissa
The School of Health Sciences Complex, comprising auditoriums, lecture halls and workshops, laboratories, a library, Secretariats and offices of the academic staff members, is on a 9-hectare plot of land, a short distance from Larissa, at Mezourlo, next to the Regional University General Hospital of Larissa. The Regional University General Hospital of Larissa at Mezourlo, has a capacity of 700 beds and operates since 1998 in modern buildings at the edge of the city.
University premises in Karditsa
The 52 hectares of farmland in the Arapolakes area were made available to the University in order for it to create a farm for the students’ training. The first stabling facility for large animals has already been constructed.
