Seismic design of masonry buildings with steel structural system. The Case of the Akron-Ilion-Crystal building on Stadiou street in Athens

Abstract:
The methodology followed for the study of the reconstruction of an existing building with steel will be presented. The existing building consisted of five floors and was made of load-bearing stone. According to the architectural solution, the perimetric stone walls were preserved, and the entire interior of the existing building was replaced with structural steel. After evaluating the advantages and disadvantages, the solution that was realized was the complete connection of the steel structure to the stone walls. An appropriate simulation model was developed, including the steel elements, the reinforced concrete slabs and the entire foundation (general slab and piles). During the construction phase, certain subsystems of the steel structure were used to support the perimetric stone walls. The methodology followed for the check of all the temporary structural systems in accordance with Eurocode 8 (EN1998-2: 2005) will also be presented.
