Lecture by Helen Tounta (Historian, Department of History and Archaeology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki)
Wednesday, 24/04/2013 at 19:00 p.m in the Multimedia Hall of the Department of History, Arhaeology and Social Anthropology of the University of Thessaly.
Summary
In the 11th century the Italian South was occupied by the Norman Knights after a successful fight against both medieval empires, the Roman Church, the Lombard Hegemonies of Southern Italy and the Muslim Emirates of Sicily. The cultural complexity of the region did not prevent them to establish their dominion and in the next century to transform the area into a Kingdom with Palermo as its capital. The study of these historical works underlines the subjects of writing, their mental horizons and the ways in which that dealt with their communities in an effort to express their way of understanding identity and difereness. The result of this "conversation" was the creation of a collective memory and the determination of the political community of the Kingdom based on a special " Sicilitudine".
