Volos 18-19/5/2017

You are cordially invited to the International Conference «Museums & Individuals with Visual Impairments-Bridging the Gap» which will be held on 18-19 May 2017 in Volos (Auditorium “KORDATOS”), at the University of Thessaly, starting at 9:30am. The conference constitutes part of the Erasmus+ project «BaGMIVI: Bridging the Gap Between Museums and Individuals with Visual Impairments» which is coordinated by the University of Thessaly (Coordinator: Dr. Vassilis Argyropoulos, Associate Professor, Department of Special Education). The Rector of the University of Thessaly, Prof. Georgios Petrakos as well as the Coordinator of the BaGMIVI project Dr. Vassilis Argyropoulos will welcome all participants. In turn, the conference programme will feature inspiring keynotes and invited speakers with extensive experience and knowledge in the area of visual impairment, in conjunction with professionals from museums and galleries. The main goal of the Conference is to present and discuss the outcomes of the BaGMIVI project, which aims to support museums developing various practices in order to reinforce the access and inclusion of people with visual disability to their context and content. Among the core themes that will underpin the programme are:
- To enable the museum members become aware and update their knowledge regarding the disabling barriers that impede the access of visitors with visual disabilities to museums, and the techniques that can enhance the access and inclusion of individuals with visual disabilities to museums.
- To create learning, cultural and social opportunities for individuals with visual disabilities and enable them to acquire self-advocacy skills regarding their rights as museum visitors and the requirements for an inclusive museum.
- To promote the collaboration between museums, schools, and organisations with associations of individuals with visual disabilities.
- To point out the best practices and guidelines for the development of an accessible and inclusive museum for visitors with visual disabilities.

Following the long tradition of Summer Schools - Conferences on Dynamical Systems and Complexity in Greece we organize the
Dynamical Systems and Complexity
12-21 July 2017, Volos, Greece

This event is intended for last year undergraduate students, postgraduates, PhD students as well as all young researchers who work on topics of nonlinear dynamical systems and are interested in complex systems in various fields of science and technology. The participants will follow introductory lectures given by distinguished Professors and experienced researchers (School), while young researchers will have the opportunity to present their work in the form of short oral presentations or posters (Conference).
The basic topics of the conference include:

2. Complex Networks and Time Series Analysis
3. Dynamical Systems in Physics, Chemistry and Biology

The School of Engineering, University of Thessaly will host the 5th Workshop on Research Activities, which will be held on Wednesday, 24th May 2017, from 09:30 am to 15:00 pm, at the Auditorium of the Department of Planning and Regional Development.

During the Workshop, there will be a presentation of the results of the research by the Ph.D. candidates of the School of Engineering:
- Department of Architecture Engineering,
- Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering,
- Department of Planning and Regional Development,
- Department of Mechanical Engineering,
- Department of Civil Engineering.

Salim Bachi was born in Algiers in 1971. Since the late 1990s he has lived mainly in Paris, but also in Grenada, in Cork (Ireland) and in Rome. His literary oeuvre has been critically acclaimed and includes his first novel Le Chien d'Ulysse (2001) winner of the Prix littéraire de la Vocation, the Prix Goncourt du Premier roman and the Bourse de la découverte Prince Pierre de Monaco. His second novel La Kahéna was published in 2004 and was awarded the Prix Tropiques. Other novels include Tuez-les tous (2006), Le silence de Mahomet (2006), Amours et aventures de Sindbad le Marin (2010), Moi, Khaled Kelkal (2012), Le dernier été d'un jeune homme (2013) and Le Consul (2014). He has also published : Les douze contes de minuit (2006) and Dieu, Allah, moi et les autres (2016), nominee for the Prix Renaudot 2017.

An open intercultural creative workshop for children will be organized on Sunday 28/05/2017 at Argonafton Park in the town of Volos. The workshop is organized from the students of the Department of Pre-School Education of the University of Thessaly in the context of the course: “Designing, organizing and evaluating intercultural actions”. The workshop focuses on the development of intercultural competences and empathy through different activities based on games and arts.

Alexander Koulidi’s lecture analyses the way in which the environmental dimension is integrated in the development planning through environmental licensing. The main aspects include concepts such as the adequacy of preventive action, the humanistic basis of environmental protection and the balancing character of environmental licensing. Then, the new institutional framework is analysed, with reference both to the origins of EU law and to mapping procedures applicable in practice. The content of environmental studies and the critical points of each chapter are also reviewed. Τhe lecture concludes with the presentation of practical environmental permit cases of major projects, which analyses the challenges that arise during the process, the requirements of the individual scientific issues and, finally, the practical results of the process.

The Department of Literature and Children’s Book of the Laboratory of Language and Culture of the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Thessaly and the Group Action for Poetry, consisting of students from the Department of Early Childhood Education of the University of Thessaly, invites you to celebrate with them the World Poetry Day and leave your own or your favorite poets’ verses on the “COLUMN OF POETRY”, on TUESDAY 21ST OF MARCH, at 12:15.
Students are going to read verses in front of the university (at the seafront). Then, we will be going to St Nicolas square for another reading action. Come and share with us this experience, regardless of age or any other element that makes us seem different. Because poetry unites us. Poets, actors, writers, artists, etc will take part in the action, as well.

On Wednesday, March 29 2017, at 18:00, in the ‘Saratsis” amphitheatre at the University of Thessaly (“Papastratos” building), Professor Sandrine Huber (University of Lorraine) and Professor Alexander Mazarakis Ainian (University of Thessaly) will present the book "Les sanctuaires archaïques des Cyclades".


Lamia 3-4/4/2017

On Tuesday 4 April, from 15.00 to 19.00, in the Amphitheater I of the School of Science of the University of Thessaly in Lamia, Dr. Juliette Leblond (Senior Researcher (DR2), INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, France) and PhD student Mr. Christos Papageorgakis (INRIA Sophia-Antipolis, France) will give us a series of talks in which they will present their research teams at INRIA, France and discuss some of their recent research findings.
Dr. Juliette Leblond and Mr. Christos Papageorgakis will be visiting the department of Computer Science and Biomedical Informatics on Monday 3 April and Tuesday 4 April.
