The Senate
The Senate is composed of the Rector, the three Vice-Rectors, the Deans of the Schools, the Heads of the Departments, eight representatives of the members of the Academic Staff (Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Lecturers), representatives of the Special Scientific and Teaching Personnel, representative of the Special Technical and Laboratory Personnel, representative of the Administrative Staff, representatives of the Undergraduate Students (one of each Department) and two representatives of the Postgraduate Students.
The Rector presides over the Senate and in his absence one of the Vice-Rectors, who is appointed by the Rector, undertakes to fulfill his duties. The Senate holds ordinary meetings to discuss matters that are within its competence once a month (the last Friday of the month) and extraordinary meetings whenever the Rector deems it necessary. The Minister of Education and Lifelong Learning may also call an extra meeting of the Senate.
Responsibilities of the Senate:
- to oversee the operation of the University and its compliance with the laws of the State and its internal regulations
- to determine the University general educational and research policy, planning and development strategy, and to give a regular account of the responsibilities entailed
- to submit proposals or/and take initiatives linking the University to its social environment and production, fostering its contribution to regional development, lifelong learning and further education for the public, as well as its cooperation with Greek and international institutions, academics and social bodies
- to express opinion about spitting, merging or renaming the University and about establishing, abolishing, merging, splitting or renaming Schools or Departments
- to approve or modify the Internal Regulation and the Organizational Chart of the Administrative Services
- to allocate positions of the members of the academic staff across Departments, following the approval by the Ministry of Education and Lifelong Learning of the total number of faculty positions
- to set up councils and committees and to determine their composition and responsibilities and any other matter related to the operation of the University collective bodies
- to approve the University regular annual budget and Public Investment Programme, as well as to approve its annual report
- to administer and manage the University assets, and to propose to the Ministry of Education and Lifelong Learning the establishment of legal entities for the development and management of its property
- to decide to suspend the operation and educational work of the University, to determine when semesters begin and end
- to decide on matters related to the operation of the University collective bodies, the increase of the number of Senate members and the completion of a Department’s General Assembly when it has fewer than five (5) academic staff members
- to appoint a Head of a Department when there are no candidates
- to designate a Vice-Rector as Deputy Rector and a Head of a Department as Deputy Vice-Rector, and to select the Head of the Secretariat and General Directors
- to approve specific measures to be taken by the Rector in dealing with emergency situations
- to produce an annual report of the activities of the University Departments and of the Rectorate Board
- to express opinion on the establishment of University research institutes
- to approve Postgraduate Studies Programmes for the University
- to award the titles of Professor Emeritus and Honorary Professor
- to delegate its responsibilities to the Rector’s Council or to other University bodies.

Rector’s Council
The members of the Rector’s Council are: the Rector, the three Vice-Rectors, a representative of the Administrative Staff, a representative of the Students (elected by the students participating in the Senate) and the Registrar of the University Secretariat.
The decisions of the Rector’s Council are announced within a month of them being made to the Senate and its members.
The Rector presides over the Rector’s Council and in his absence one of the Vice-Rectors, who is appointed by the Rector, substitutes for him. The Rector’s Council holds ordinary meetings twice a month, given that there are matters to be discussed, and extra meetings whenever the Rector deems it necessary or if it is requested by half of its members by means of a relevant application.
Responsibilities of the Rector’s Council:
- to propose the University budget and Programme of works to the Senate and to supervise the implementation of the relevant Senate decisions
- to decide on the proposals of Schools about new staff and to make the relevant suggestions to the University Education Council and to the Ministry of Education and Lifelong Learning
- to decide on the organization of the University Central Administration Services and on the allocation of Administrative and Special Technical and Laboratory Personnel
- to carry out the tasks assigned to it by the Senate.
